Wizz RSS 4.0.1.0 maxVersion bumped to 6.0.*

August 18, 2011
By Mike

For those who have upgraded to Firefox 6.0, I have bumped maxVersion, in Wizz RSS 4.0.1.0, to 6.0.n, and it seems to work. I haven’t done any comprehensive testing, but I’m using it myself and I haven’t spotted any major weirdness yet.

If you want to install Wizz RSS 4.0.1.0 on Firefox 6.0, you can do so by clicking this link: – http://blat.co.za/XPIs/wizzrss4010.xpi

If you have “purchased” a nag free version of Wizz RSS, by making a donation, you can get the nag free version here http://www.wizzrss.com/dlnn.php

Hi, since Firefox has now insisted on upgrading to v7.1 will you be able to bump maxVersion up to 7 without other mods? I am missing Wizz RSS.

    Thanks

    Best Regards

        Hello,
I do not know why, but it seems that Wizz RSS (and babel fish) run again under FF (v. 10). If Mozilla has changed its policy, that is in the good path now.
Mike, you should update your web page.
        FF5 it’s too far away.

I’ve already bumped max ver to ff9 and ff7 installed it. I got tired of fixing it every other week;). Although Max vers Is the easiest to fix.

I guess I don’t understand. Why would you put on Facebook (ugh!) something you won’t put in your own blog? Is it instructions for changing the Version? Why not tell the rest of us?

Wizz RSS is by far the best RSS add-in out there. I’ve tried two others and had to re-install an old FF4 that had Wizz in it. So now I can’t use FF7 because it keeps throwing Wizz out.

OK, if you simply can’t fix it, let us know. But please, sir, do NOT ask me to go to FaceBook.

      Dan,

A few users offered solutions for getting Wizz RSS to work on FF 7, and they posted the solutions on Facebook. I didn’t put it there, although I guess I did trigger the postings by responding to various requests on Facebook to get Wizz RSS working on FF 7.

    Hi there,

after reading the google cache of facebook (hate it), there is indeed a solution that helped me out.

You need to disable the version check in firefox (not quite a good solution, but works for me)

easiest way to do so – as mentioned on evilbook:
    1. install the addon “Nightly tester tools”
    2. after ff restart, check out the new menu item “Nightly tester tools” and activate menu “Force Addon Compatibility”
    3. Restart FF
    4. be happy ;-)

Version 8 is out. Even with “force addon compatibility” checked Wizz (and others) remains disabled. In about:config I don’t see an entry for checking compatibility of version 8.

    Hi there,

I’ve tried several times to post replies on your blog Mike especially because I don’t like Facebook. It did not work. I got the same message as one of the bloggers on facebook.
I hope that this time it will.
First it was to say that I am using wizz rss every day at work and at home to follow the TOCs of scientific journals (I could not find any satisfactory replacement yet). It is probably one of the soft I am using the most frequently so it is very important for me to keep it alive as long as possible.
Second to inform the remaining users that wizz rss works with the ff8.0. I used the nightly tester tool to update from ff6 to ff7. This time I did not need to do anything wizz was still available.
One thing though that you kept repeating in your posts: please do not forget to export the OPML file BEFORE upgrading otherwise your feeds will be lost!

    I hope this helps!
    Best
    M

I’m really sorry to say that despite having installed the “Nightly Tester Tools” add-on and to have checked “Force Add-On Compatibility”, I can no longer use Wizz RSS. That work-around functioned fine with the last iteration of FireFox, but since the upgrade to FF8, it no longer does the job, and I’m really pissed off about that.

I understand your irritation with Mozilla as a software devloper (that stuff remains a total mystery to me), but I also feel somewhat bereft now that I can no longer use Wizz RSS.

I have been forced to try several other RSS NewsReaders, and let me tell you that none of them come anywhere near to be close in their functionality and ease of use as your add-on did!

Anyway, thanks for the many months that I was able to use Wizz RSS. Perhaps, in time, you might reconsider your decision not to update it and make it work with the newer FF. I certainly hope so.

In the meantime, thanks for all that you have previously done. Very much appreciated by me, and I’m sure many others too!

My very best regards to you and yours …..

    Mike K

One day, when Mozilla wake up to the fact that they are their own worst enemy, I might consider Firefox development again. But somehow I doubt that will ever happen. My feeling is that Firefox will eventually go the same way that Netscape went :(

    • Fantasio8 on November 23, 2011 at 8:08 pm

      Hi Mike K,

I went again through the procedure to keep wizz alive on one of my other computers at home. This time I did not install the nightly tester. I only used the Addon compatibility reporter (I don’t know what it does exactly). Wizz was working too with FF8.0.
I had to restore the feeds with the OPML. But other than that I am still the lucky user of Wizz.
You might want to give it a try.

Mike, I still hope that you might change your mind. Several friends are asking when they come visiting to my office which addon I am using to follow the table of content of my preferred journals. I know for sure that 5 of them became users (they asked how to update to FF8.0).

I confirm that using the Add-on Compatibility Reporter add-on allowed me to enable Wizz-RSS on FF8.0.

    • Fantasio8 on January 3, 2012 at 2:04 pm

      Dear All,

      Happy New Year!
I just went through the update to FF 9.0 with the compatiblity reporter add-on installed. Wizz is still working fine.

      Best

  10. no_facebook on December 17, 2011 at 7:41 pm

Also confirming: Addon Compatibility works… lost my rss feeds, but no problem… at least i can continue using WizzRSS…

maybe you could consider releasing the sourcecode to the world?

    • Mike on December 18, 2011 at 7:33 am

You already have the source code. The distributable includes all of the source.

  11. Erik on January 7, 2012 at 10:51 am

Using Firefox 9.0.1, Wizz 4.0.1.0 and Add-on Compatibility Reporter.
Wizz appears to work and when new items are found, the text of the found item tab is bold. However, when I select this tab, the list is empty (no found items are shown).

    Any clue how to fix?

  12. Sven on March 15, 2012 at 2:29 pm

Oh no, Wizz RSS don´t run since FireFox 11.
Please make a patch for this new FireFox version.

    Thank you.

  13. Erik on May 7, 2012 at 4:07 am

Anyone have a clue how to get Wizz RSS to work with FF 12?
