Steps to stop the nag page from displaying.

1. Close Firefox.
2. In your Firefox profile folder, find the file called wizzrss.jar – On a Windows PC you’ll find wizzrss.jar in C:Documents and Settings<user name>Application DataMozillaFirefoxProfiles<some funny number>.defaultextensions{D5EDC062-A372-4936-B782-BD611DD18D86}chrome
3. Rename wizzrss.jar to wizzrss.zip
4. Unzip wizzrss.zip
5. Look for a file named toolbar.js
6. Open toolbar.js using a text editor and comment out the line that reads setTimeout(“checkUpdates()”, 30000); i.e. Change as follows: -

if (Date.parse(today) != readPref(“WizzRSSLastCheck”, “0″, 1)) {
    writePref(“WizzRSSLastCheck”, Date.parse(today), 1);
    //setTimeout(“checkUpdates()”, 30000);
}

7. Save the changes to toolbar.js
8. Re-zip everything and rename the resulting .zip to .jar
9. Restart Firefox.

    Thanks Mike. Just installed the patch on the wife’s laptop. I won’t have to answer the “what is this” question anymore.

    It worked on XP. On Win Vista it worked as well only thing is that the location of wizzrss.jar is a different. In my case it could be found on: C:UsersMEAppDataRoamingMozillaFirefoxProfileslvgxs04i.defaultextensions{D5EDC062-A372-4936-B782-BD611DD18D86}chrome
    Thanks

    I am soooo annoyed by this continually coming up in my Firefox browser. I’ve followed your instructions Mac OSX4.11. They do NOT work. I’ve NEVER used your RSS and do not intend to. Please, please help me to rid myself of this annoyance.

  4. Mike on February 18, 2010 at 11:04 pm

    @Roonie: You have used the Wizz RSS add-on, otherwise the page would not be displaying. Uninstall it and the page will stop displaying. If you don’t know how to uninstall a Firefox add-on, please see the Wizz RSS online help.

    I have tried 4 times to donate for WIZZ (which I love), and each time Paypal hangs or tells me to use a different credit card (which I also tried) or erases what I entered. So either nothing will end up donated or 4 times what I entered will be donated. In either case, maybe you can do something about what is happening there. I absolutely hate Paypal. I never have this problem with any other payment and I almost always have a problem with Paypal.

    @Sheila: Errrrmmmm… Sorry, but there isn’t anything I can do about PayPal (I wish I could). I haven’t received any notifications of payments made by you, so don’t worry about having made 4 donations.

    I’ve try you patch many times on my firefox portable. Everything is fine except the fact that the WizzRSS button on the toolbar wouldnt work any more.

  8. Mike on March 19, 2010 at 8:57 pm

    Errrrmmmmmm… Are you sure that you repacked the .jar file correctly? I’m using exactly the same patch and all the buttons work just fine. Unless it’s some funny with portable Firefox.

    Mike,

    Paypal finally accepted one of my credit cards and I did make a donation (Receipt Number: 0318-7408-2219-8758) 2 days ago, but I haven’t gotten the nag free version from you yet. Please send it…

    @Sheila: You download the nag free version here: – http://www.wizzrss.com/dlnn.php

    Supply the same email address you used to make the donation.

    I have successfully modified toolbox.js on each successive version of FireFox 3.x. However, I downloaded 4.0 this week and the experimental WizzRSS 4.0 version. It works perfectly, but I can no longer get rid of the nag page as there is no wizzrss.jar or toolbar.js that I can find in my profile.

    Is there someplace else I need to look for the experimental 4.0 version?

  12. Mike on March 28, 2011 at 7:50 am

    @Blue Sun: The steps to stop the nag page from displaying should be exactly the same.

  13. Jimi on March 28, 2011 at 2:18 pm

    As BlueSun said above.
    I have also installed 4.0, and there is no wizzrss.jar file to modify to remove the NAG. The published method worked fine for all versions of 3.x, but for 4.x, there doesn’t seem to be the same file system. Help!

  14. Mike on March 28, 2011 at 3:02 pm

    Ahhhhh… Okay I just had a look :) I guess I should have had a look when Blue Sun reported a problem, but having a look means shutting down Ubuntu (where I only have FF3) and booting Windows (Yuk!)

    Right, here is what you need to do: -

    1. In the same place you’ll find a file called {D5EDC062-A372-4936-B782-BD611DD18D86}.xpi
    2. Rename {D5EDC062-A372-4936-B782-BD611DD18D86}.xpi to {D5EDC062-A372-4936-B782-BD611DD18D86}.zip and unzip it.
    3. After unzipping {D5EDC062-A372-4936-B782-BD611DD18D86}.zip, you’ll find wizzrss.jar.
    4. Continue as per other instructions.
    5. After re-zipping wizzrss.jar you’ll need to repack everything into the .xpi. Hope that makes sense.

    Seems easier just to make a contribution ;) .

    @jimi When you unzip {D5EDC062-A372-4936-B782-BD611DD18D86}.zip, you’ll find a folder called Chrome. wizzrss.jar is in there. It feels like playing with those Russian matryoshka or babushka dolls, the ones where each time you take a doll apart, there’s a smaller one inside ;)

    I still don’t understand why the wizzrss people still left that bogosity in 4.0. I don’t mind contributing to a well-done product (I am a software developer myself), but I am always resistant when somebody uses an inconvenience (like getting rid of ads or the infamous nag page) to fish for a contribution.

  16. Mike on March 28, 2011 at 6:37 pm

    @Blue Sun: The nag page was never intended to be a nag page, and it was certainly never intended to coerce people into making a contribution. The original function of the nag page was to inform users, very occasionally, of important updates, changes and/or vulnerabilities that had been patched.

    Unfortunately the majority of open source software users don’t think the way that you do. Unfortunately the majority of open source users are selfish, greedy, and unthinking people, who, for some weird reason, seem to believe that they have a RIGHT to free software. Unfortunately it is also true that many Firefox users feel they have a RIGHT to use ad blocking add-ons, which block the very revenue stream that people like myself use to cover the costs of providing a free service, thus the nag page.

    I can also assure you that contributions made by various users of Wizz RSS, don’t even come close to covering the costs that I pay, out of my own pocket, every single month. So the logic is simple: If you don’t like the nag page, are unable to make the code changes to stop the nag page from displaying, and/or are not in a position to make a contribution, then go get yourself another feed reader.
