Wizz RSS Lite 3.1.0.1

June 29, 2009
By Mike

For those of you who use Wizz RSS Lite, version 3.1.0.1 has been made public on AMO. It would be a very good idea to update to version 3.1.0.1, as it closes some vulnerability holes.

Wizz RSS Lite now also has a page on Facebook. If you’d like to report bugs, or make feature requests, please use the Discussions tab on the Wizz RSS Lite Facebook page.

    Bug:

After upgrading to Firefox 3.5.30729, and to Wizz RSS 3.1.0.1, the “Found Items” tab is now permanently blank. Items found in the watch list are only highlighted in the WizzRSS tab, which kills the usefulness of the tool.

You can respond to my email account if you have questions.
Sorry to leave this here, but I don’t want to sign up for a Facebook account in order to report a bug. Ever consider developing on SourceForge, or another site that supports defect tracking?

  2. Mike on June 30, 2009 at 8:04 pm

    Reporting bugs here is fine.

Errrmmm… Wizz RSS Lite doesn’t have a Found Items tab.

If you are talking about the full version of Wizz RSS, I’m using 3.1.0.1 on Firefox 3.5rc3 and everything seems to work just fine for me.

  3. Mike on June 30, 2009 at 8:20 pm

I’ve just upgraded to 3.5 final, and everything still seems to be working perfectly for me. I’ve tested the Watch List with Find and Save feeds… Works just fine.

  4. dragoworld on June 30, 2009 at 10:20 pm

I have the same problem as jw9mitchell.
Before upgrading to ff3.5, I did an opml export.
Once ff upgraded and wizz too to version 3.1.0.1, my feeds were missing.
I imported the opml back, and moved all the feeds from the opml import subfolder into the “Wizz RSS” folder.
I had to redo my watch list.
Now, when I execute the watch list (all feeds with option find), the “Found Items” panel stays blank.

  5. Mike on June 30, 2009 at 10:32 pm

Weird! I can’t see any problem.

Did you guys perhaps update any other add-ons?

  6. dragoworld on June 30, 2009 at 10:36 pm

I uninstalled the plugin (keeping the feeds), then I deleted the wizzrss folder in my ff plugin.
After having reinstalled the plugin, the found items panel is working.

  7. Mike on June 30, 2009 at 10:42 pm

    Hmmmm… Okay…

I’ve no idea why that should fix the problem, but if it works: :)

It kinda makes sense that I didn’t see the problem because I didn’t upgrade from FF 3.0 to 3.5. I’ve been working with 3.1 betas and 3.5 betas since last year sometime.

BUG in Wizz RSS Lite 3.1.0.1
After upgrading every time I select an RSS link, it
not only shows all the feeds for the link, but it
also redirects the current browser tab to the URL of the feed.
    VERY annoying!

  9. Mike on July 1, 2009 at 6:37 am

@nobody special: There is a new option on the Feeds tab labeled Preview Mode. The new option is documented here http://www.wizzrss.com/Welcome.php and here http://wizzrss.blat.co.za/2009/03/20/3009update/

I assume your Preview Mode is turned on.

  10. Mike on July 1, 2009 at 7:05 am

More Firefox funnies: I received the following message from jw9mitchell: -

    :?:

  11. Mike on July 1, 2009 at 11:18 am

@nobody special: There is a bug with the Preview Mode. Please see http://wizzrss.blat.co.za/2009/07/01/preview-mode-bug/

Now you know why I beg people to beta test for me. Unfortunately no one thinks that beta testing is important, until they find the bugs in new versions!

  12. Volker on July 1, 2009 at 3:56 pm

I have problems too: Actual items are missing.

  13. Volker on July 1, 2009 at 4:11 pm

    e.g.:
    http://www.geo.de/GEOaudio/index.xml

Wizz RSS Lite 3.1.0: Latest entry 7th May 2009

but there are entries until 25th Juni 2009

Where are these entries in Wizz RSS?

  14. Mike on July 1, 2009 at 7:52 pm

@Volker: I replied to your email. For those who’d like to know what I said in my reply, here it is: -

OK, I have tested the feed at http://www.geo.de/GEOaudio/index.xml and I can find nothing wrong at all.

I tested the feed with Internet Explorer just to rule out any possible problem with the Firefox feed reader. I also tested the feed as a raw feed through Firefox, and I tested the feed through Wizz RSS. Everything returns exactly the same result. A total of 340 items in the feed. I modified the Wizz RSS code to count them :)

Are you sure that you don’t perhaps a few read items hidden?

    Regards

    Mike

    Hi Mike

Same issue with upgrade to 3.5 as jw9mitchell and dragoworld. Watch list seems to run but never shows found items.

Tried uninstall, reinstall, tried delete folders, reinstall. No joy.

This is my fave add-in (great work!) so hope you can work out what the trouble is. Otherwise I’ll just hope it goes away by itself, as it did with jw9mitchell…

  16. Mike on July 2, 2009 at 3:49 pm

@EmDub: Unfortunately I have been unable to replicate the problem. I’m thus unable to work out what is causing the problem, and therefore unable to offer any intelligent advice on how to fix it.

  17. EmDub on July 3, 2009 at 2:02 pm

    HURRAY! Problem solved!

Rather than uninstalling from within FF (and saying ‘yes’ to delete folders question), I deleted the Wizz folder directly in extensions (the one with wizzrss.jar in it, folder was {D5EDC062-A372-4936-B782-BD611DD18D86} – which is not helpful) and deleted the other wizzrss folder (with wizzrss.sqlite in it).

Reinstalled from addons.mozilla.org and everything ok. Even kept the feeds (didn’t this used to be visible in Bookmarks dropdown? not there anymore anyway).

Another thing that may help you track down problem: Clicking in found items top pane, even when looked blank, linked to a ‘found item’ from before the upgrade to 3.5, and displayed the feed text in lower pane. Top pane always stayed blank. Linked item always the same, worked when clicking anywhere in top pane.

  18. Mike on July 3, 2009 at 2:08 pm

@EmDub: The more I hear about this problem, the more weird it sounds :)

Thanks for the feedback though. I’m sure it’ll help anyone else who is having the same problem.

  19. Mike on July 23, 2009 at 8:03 am

@Sean: Make sure that you actually have feeds that are marked as watched. Importing the OPML would have lost all of your watched feeds.

  20. EricM on August 7, 2009 at 8:03 pm

I also have the same issue with the Found items pane that everyone else seems to be reporting. I tried the fix from “EmDub Says:July 3rd, 2009 at 2:02 pm ” and that did NOT resolve the issue. I tried deleting both of the folders that were in the firefox apps directory that contained wizzrss.jar and then re-installing from Mozilla. I then re-imported my opml file. Found pane still shows blank. Always. nothing ever happens when I click the top pane.

  21. Mike on August 7, 2009 at 10:21 pm

@EricM: Make 100% sure that you actually have feeds in your Watch List.

  22. EricM on August 8, 2009 at 4:55 am

Mike – how can I be SURE? The feeds do have the left-arrows next to them in the list, and when the watch list runs, it takes forever to run, and new items DO show up in the feed list, just not the found list.

  23. Mike on August 8, 2009 at 9:12 am

@EricM: In that case – Sorry but I have absolutely no idea what is causing the problem, and apart from what has been posted here, I have no idea how to fix it :(

Every time there is a major Firefox update, this happens and it me off. Obviously something has changed within the Firefox code to cause the weirdness. Developers, like myself, don’t follow the same upgrade path that most users follow, thus we don’t see the weirdness – Well I didn’t see it, nor the toolbar weirdness.

I think it is true to say that, in most cases, add-on developers try really hard to produce something that is worthwhile and that works well. It’s really disheartening when the people at the core of the “cause” you are trying to contribute to, are themselves the most frustrating stumbling block. And usually the developer usually gets blamed :(

  24. EricM on August 8, 2009 at 2:18 pm

One last bit of info, which I can only hope helps – I installed WizzRSS on a different machine, also running FF3.5, which had never had wizzrss installed before, and IT works fine. Maybe if there was a more thorough way of removing wizzrss from the machine with the issues than EmDub’s procedure?

  25. Mike on August 8, 2009 at 4:53 pm

    Thanks Eric :)

I have no way of confirming this, but I’ve suspected all along that the problem is being caused by the migration of bookmarks when upgrading to 3.5. Wizz RSS uses some custom bookmark annotations – Which is a perfectly allowable within the Places paradigm – To indicate various things, like read/unread, watched/not watched, etc. I’m sure that these custom annotations are not being migrated correctly during the upgrade process. That would explain why it works as it should on a “clean” machine.

  26. rollo on August 16, 2009 at 12:36 pm

    Hi,

My WizzRSS has lost all its feeds since upgrading to Firefox 3.5 (Mac OS X 10.5.7 / Firefox 3.5.2 / WizzRSS 3.1.0).

I’ve tried reimporting the bookmarks from the bookmarksbackup folder, but it seems to be ignoring the WizzRSS folder.

So am I right in understanding the solution is to reinstall the WizzRSS plugin?

    Ta!

  27. Mike on August 16, 2009 at 1:23 pm

@rollo: I guess you were one of those who ignored all the warnings? For about 4 or 5 months before Firefox 3.5 was released, I’ve been warning people to make an OPML backup of their feeds. It was on the Wizz RSS welcome page for and I even blogged about it here: – http://wizzrss.blat.co.za/2009/03/22/opmlexport/

Reinstalling the Wizz RSS add-on resurrect your lost feeds.

  28. rollo on August 16, 2009 at 1:35 pm

    Evidently.

In my defence, how was I supposed to find this? I have no reason to visit the Wizz RSS front page. Why would I even read your blog? Plus I had absolutely no idea that Firefox was about to update…

Anyway – let’s be proactive, rather than accusing people of stupidity (I’m not blaming you, but who should I blame? It’s hardly my own fault when something unexpectedly stops working!)

Judging by your blog post, other people have fallen foul of this. Can you point me at the location where you’ve posted your ‘best fix’? Is it to manually reload all the WizzRSS bookmarks, or can you think of a better solution?

    Thanks!

  29. Mike on August 16, 2009 at 1:46 pm

@rollo: For this very reason, I regularly a display of the Welcome page for EVERYONE who uses Wizz RSS. I know for a fact that twice the Welcome page displayed, in huge blue letters, a warning to make an OPML backup.

Unfortunately, I also know for a fact that most people ignore my attempts at communication. Of course they then turn around and try to blame me for their own stupidity. So actually, you do only have yourself to blame.

There is no fix! The same thing happened during the upgrade to Firefox 3.0, and this is exactly why I went out of my way to warn people.

  30. rollo on August 16, 2009 at 1:55 pm

That’s nice. Call people stupid because they fail to read every popup window that appears on their PC!

OK, thanks for your feedback. I’ve enjoyed my time using WizzRSS, but if your response is to call people stupid every time something goes wrong, I guess I should look elsewhere.

    Thanks anyway…

  31. Mike on August 16, 2009 at 2:23 pm

    rollo said: – “”

I assume it was me you were wanting to accuse of being stupid. Funny how people on the Internet take offense when they have their own nonsense thrown back at them?

  32. Mike on August 16, 2009 at 3:39 pm

Damn right I’m annoyed about the issue. I’m not obliged to notify anyone of anything, but I do… I try! But regardless of my attempts to keep people informed, I still have people getting on case because refuse to read!

    “”

You have no reason? So then why did you read the blog when your feeds went missing? Just being a Wizz RSS user should be enough reason, otherwise don’t complain! Even without reason to read the blog, you still get the information pushed in your face. Of course many complain about the fact that I push the information in their face, and then still complain that I failed to inform them!

    Oh… Don’t use Sage-Too, because that’s also mine!

  33. jajaja on August 20, 2009 at 8:02 am

Count me in! I also lost all my feeds :-/. It’s bad, but not so bad as being hit by bus. I guess, I’ll have to be more careful next time.

    Cheers,

  34. Mike on August 20, 2009 at 8:17 am

@jajaja: It pays to keep yourself informed.

In total, there are four different sources of information with regard to Wizz RSS. Whenever there are important issues, I will post the same information to all four sources.

    1) The Wizz RSS Welcome page – http://www.wizzrss.com/Welcome.php

    2) This blog: which usually attracts useful information from other users.

    3) The Wizz RSS forum (Which is in read-only mode, but I still post stuff there) – http://www.wizzrss.com/phpBB2/index.php

    4) Facebook: which I only started fairly recently (The same Facebook information is also displayed on the online help home page) – http://www.facebook.com/pages/Wizz-RSS-News-Reader/90406567947

Hey… firefox just upgraded me to 3.5.2 and then the newest wizz rss got updated.

My watch list is gone… I’ve seen other posts about this but has anyone found a fix so I don’t have to re-enter my watch list?

Please let me know… I cannot live without my wizz rss! :-)

    Thanks,

    Dave

  36. Anne Nonymous on October 14, 2009 at 6:55 am

I don’t know if this will help anyone, but I ran into this error just today and sadly had not backed up my RSS feeds. However, I was able to recover the contents of my watchlist by going back through my Firefox history to the last time I ran the watchlist. Then all I had to do was select them and copy them over to the Wizz RSS folder in my bookmarks organizer and they were magically restored. I still had to re-add them to my watchlist, but at least I had them back.
